Through NAC Arts-housing grant, Gamelan Asmaradana Ltd is based at 63 Kerbau Road, in the Little India Arts Belt. In the process, we have started regular Javanese dance class on Wednesday, and Balinese Gamelan rehearsals every Saturday.
The new year began with the arrival of our new Balinese gamelan set - a Gamelan Semarandana - 7-tone, 25 piece set.
We are happy to oragnise supportive and complementary gamelan activities like Javanese dance, Balinese dance workshops, as well as corporate teambuilding workshops at our space. Do contact us for more information.
Ramayana under the Stars (22 May) at Stamford Green went by smoothly. Organised by Peranakan Museum, in celebration of International Museums Day 2010, it was wonderfully relaxing day of gamelan music with dance and ended with two wayang kulit performances in the evening. This day was extra special as it brought three gamelan ensembles together - Gamelan Asmaradana, Gamelan Naga Kencana (RP) and Gamelan Singa Nglaras (NUS)
Also, for the first time in our history we were blessed with two "sell out" shows for Malam Di Bali (2 & 3 April) at Recital Studio, Esplanade. It was a memorable experience working and performing with Pak Dewa Alit from Jan to April 2010.
The memorable event in the last quarter was the Cultural Field-trip to Bali between 28 Nov to 6 Dec. We organised this special trip for SJi-International students. It was both enjoyable as well as a learning experience. Then, Pak Midiyanto brought his kids out to Singapore for a 5-day get-together and holiday. We had a fun time playing gamelan and visiting various tourist attractions with his kids. We held a Christmas party for all Gamelan Asmaradana members with their kids and spouses included. We are One big faimly now. That was how 2009 ended... with an exciting note for us.
Back by popular demand, "Clever Monkey Sebung" will be staged at Theatre Studio, Esplanade (13-14 Sept) for schools only under Esplanade's F.Y.I 2010 series. Click here for more details!
Briefly: This is a colourful dance-drama performance that tells the story of a gamelan ensemble preparing for a temple anniversary in a small Balinese village.Watch as the musicians transform into a tribe of monkeys and learn to chant “kecak”. Beware, however, of the evil witch, who tries to disrupt the preparations. In the end, a balance between good and evil is restored and the village rejoices in a successful ceremony, rich with music, dance, colourful offerings, and more!
Schools are able to use the TOTE Board Arts Grant subsidy of up to 60% (excluding GST) of the ticket price. To avoid disappointment, please call Esplanade Box Office 6828 8389 or email boxoffice@esplanade.com to book your seats early!
